More than 2,000 homes and businesses were without power for nearly an hour because of a fault in an underground cable.

Electricity supplier NEDL was alerted about the power failure at 9.12am yesterday and used an alternative network so power was back on by 10am.

A spokesman for NEDL said the power cut affected 2,883 users in the SR1 and SR2 areas.

He said: "We apologise to the public for any inconvenience. We don't anticipate any further interruptions."

Engineers were working yesterday to trace the cause of the fault, which caused some problems in the city centre.

Staff at McKenzie Bell Solicitors on John Street reported losing power from 9am for about an hour.

Traffic lights at the bottom of John Street were affected by the power cut.

The Winter Gardens was also hit, with power returning just before it opened at 10am, in time for a visit from local schoolchildren.
