Driver freed from crashed BMW

A man was cut free from his car after it left the A19.

The driver, who is in his 20s and from the Sunderland area, was travelling along the southbound carriageway when the accident happened at 12.40am on Wednesday.

His BMW Z3 left the road at the turn-off for Peterlee and plunged down an embankment.

He was already being treated by paramedics when firefighters arrived on the scene and the officers cut off the roof of the vehicle and helped lift him on to a spinal board.

He was taken to North Tees Hospital for treatment, although the extent of his injuries are not known.

Police are investigating the accident, which happened during a downpour.
