After a public vote the region's specialist children's hospital will be called The Great North Children's Hospital.

Although based in Newcastle, the hospital will serve children from across the North East and Cumbria and will be ready in 2010.

Sunderland AFC chairman Niall Quinn said: "This hospital will provide a much-needed service and I would urge the people of our region to lend their backing to ensuring that this hospital benefits generations to come."

The winning name was announced by Newcastle United manager, Kevin Keegan.
