A690 closed after HGV overturns and leaves debris on road

Northumbria Police and Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service were called to the route on the Houghton and Sunderland-bound side of the carriageway near to the turn off to the B1284 to Rainton Bridge.
The incident was reported earlier today, Thursday, April 22, with a diversion in place for traffic in the area.

Hide AdA photo shared by the force’s Road Safety Team shows the contents of the HGV have spilt onto the outside lane of the road and the central reservation, with officers asking people to avoid the area.
A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “At 10.45am today we received a report that a heavy goods vehicle had overturned on the A690 Durham Road at Rainton Bridge, Houghton.
“Emergency services are at the scene.”
They said the eastbound side of the road would remain closed while the clear-up operation was carried out, with a diversion in place.
The fire service said it was called in to assist with the recovery of an overturned HGV which had spilt rubble and fuel on to the road.

Hide AdA spokesperson added: “We dispatched three appliances with crews from Rainton Bridge Community Fire Station, Sunderland Central Fire Station and Faringdon Community Fire Station with the first crew on the scene at 10.51am.
“An Enviro Pack was administered at the scene to help soak up the spillage of fuel.”
The crews left the scene at 11.55am, when a recovery vehicle had already arrived on site.
