Death of man struck by Metro not suspicious say transport police

The incident happened between Seaburn and Stadium of Light Metro stations.

Police investigating the death of a man hit by a Metro train is not being treated as suspicious.

The tragedy happened on Saturday night in between Seaburn and Stadium of Light stations, when the man was struck by a train heading south.

Trains were immediately suspended between Pelaw and South Hylton in the aftermath of the incident, with Metro following its major incident procedures and emergency services called to the scene.

A spokesman for the British Transport Police said: "At approximately 10.55pm on Saturday, May 13, we were called to the railway line close to Newcastle Road in Sunderland following reports of a person being hit by a train.

"Officers attended however a 26-year-old man was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

"His family have been told.

"This incident is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner."
