Power cut shuts down Sunderland traffic lights

A power cut has shut down traffic lights in Sunderland.

The electricity outage is affecting traffic signals on near the university on A183 Chester Road, as well as the A1231 Wessington Way.

NE Traffic News (@NECATraffic) tweeted: "POWER CUT: A183 Chester Road in #Sunderland at the University & A1231. Traffic signals off in this area.

"Our team are working hard to restore your power as quickly as possible."

Northern Powergrid said on its website that the power cut had been caused by a problem with one of its underground cables.

It is estimated that the power to be restored by noon.
