Newcastle United are close to strengthening their under-23s squad with the arrival of two overseas players.

As per reports in South America, Peru international Rodrigo Vilca is on the verge of joining the club after the Magpies agreed a fee with Deportivo Municipal.

The attacking midfielder will bid farewell to Municipal in their game with Universitario tomorrow before travelling to Tyneside to finalise a move.

“There is already a formal proposal by Newcastle and Rodrigo Vilca will travel to England on October 1,” said Deportivo Municipal president Jose Cordova

“He is a very important player for us, but he will play his last match this Wednesday.

“He has a community passport because he lived in Spain for 11 years so he will not be a foreign player for Newcastle.”

Vilca, 21, is likely to undergo a settling in period in Chris Hogg’s squad with a view to a potential loan in the January transfer window.

A new name in the mix however, is South Africa U20s left-footed defender Bradley Cross.

The 19-year-old, who holds a UK passport, is a free agent following a two-year loan spell at Bundesliga club Schalke 04 and has been scouted by a number of Premier League clubs already.

He featured 33 times for the German side’s under-19s last term, which alerted United and many of their top-flight rivals to his signature.

Prior to his time in Germany, Cross was on the books at Bidvest Wits in his homeland.
