Charlie Wyke’s fine first-header from a perfectly placed Aiden McGeady cross proved enough for the Black Cats, who were forced to do some defending after the break to hold onto a precious victory as the visitors committed men forward.
The triumph marked Lee Johnson’s first League One win at home, while it was also the first time since the November 3 victory over Ipswich Town that Sunderand had taken maximum points from a home league game.
So who caught the eye against the Shrews, and who has work to do moving forward?
Our chief football writer, Phil Smith, has dished out his merit marks from the clash – which represented a crucial win in the hunt for promotion. So scroll down to see who he thought shone and struggled against the Shrews:
1. Lee Burge
Made a big save from Chapman in the first half to keep the scores level, but his distribution throughout was poor and almost cost his side when Clarke fired over early on. 5 Photo: FRANK REID 2019
2. Max Power
Almost punished when Whalley caught him out of position in the second half, and needs to keep building his partnership with Diamond down the right. Coped well enough, though. 6 Photo: FRANK REID 2020
3. Bailey Wright
A crucial figure in the second half as Sunderland came under increased pressure, winning headers and challenges aplenty to keep his team’s lead intact. 8 Photo: FRANK REID 2020
4. Jordan Willis
Defended well and most encouragingly, looked sharp after the latest setback with his patellar tendon on Tuesday night. Heartening ahead of the midweek test at Ipswich. 7 Photo: Frank Reid
