The Black Cats currently have just one senior left-sided defender available for selection, with Hume set to be out for a further eight weeks after a setback in his recovery.
Callum McFadzean has been holding the fort in Hume’s absence, but Lee Johnson is set to dip into the market to bolster that particular area of his squad before the January transfer window closes.
But with the League One salary cap a factor in any potential deals, the Black Cats will likely be focusing on players under the age of 21 – given they are exempt from the controversial cap.
So who could be on the club’s radar this month? We take a look at the Premier League youngsters and free agents who could be available and that would fit the bill for Sunderland this month:
1. Alex Cochrane
The Brighton youngster has already been linked with the Black Cats this month and, with his contract up in six months, could be available. He is currently on loan at Belgian side Union SG which could complicate a deal. Photo: Alex Burstow
2. Cole Dasilva
Formerly on the books of Chelsea, Dasilva may not have a great deal of senior experience - but he possesses a lot of the attributes required by a left-back in Lee Johnson's system. He could be an interesting option. Photo: Jordan Mansfield
3. Oscar Tarensi
Currently on the books of Manchester City, the Spanish full-back is another who does not have a wealth of senior experience under his belt - but whose pedigree could make him an option. Photo: Alex Livesey
4. Tony Gallacher
Gallacher has recently returned to parent club Liverpool after a loan spell with Toronto in the MLS, and may well be in-line for another loan move. He'd be an excellent acquisition, but may have suitors higher up the pyramid. Photo: Charlotte Tattersall
